My Freshman Year of College = Complete ✓

My first year of college is officially done and now its time to unpack and prepare for summer. This past year was one of the best years of my life. Choosing to go to Cal Lutheran was not only an amazing experience, but also, the best decision I have ever made. My year involved its ups and its down but I took everything that happened and turned it into a learning experience. As I was packing, my roommates asked me if I was sad to go, and honestly my answer was no. I say this because, everything must come to a close at some point and while this year was great, what I have ahead of me is even more wonderful. Next year I have so many more opportunities such as being a Peer Advisor (which you will hear about more in the future.) And over the summer I got offered the position of my dreams at the summer camp that I work at.

Now even though I sound so eager about my future, I can not forget about my freshman year. I met so many people who challenged my worth ethic, became my mentor, inspired me, but most importantly became my friend. I made this video as a tribute to my Freshman year. Let me know what you think about it in the comments!

I would like to thank everyone who supported me through out this journey, everyone’s works of encouragement and love really mean the world to me.

This may be the last time you hear from me for a while because I am going to be busy over the summer, but this blog is called, “Tori in Thousand Oaks”… so once I am back in TO, you will hear from me again. I hope everyone has a wonderful summer and I found this quote inspirational, so I hope you do too.

The Rainbow Wall Must Come Down

Untitled designBefore coming to college, I was on Pinterest looking up dorm decoration ideas. I came across a post that involved using paint swatches to create a rainbow design on a blank wall. I had always seen things like that and thought it this was a perfect chance to do it. If you want to see the process of how my roommates and I did it, I wrote a post about it earlier in the year, so you can click right here and you can read all about it.

The semester is coming to a close and I will be the first one moving out. I really wanted to have a goodbye with just my roommates because there is hardly ever a time where it is just us anymore. I thought since we all put the wall up together, it would be a great idea to take the wall down together too, so we decided to dedicated a day before finals just to roommates.

This was a special moment for us as it put a close to the end of our freshman year and we wanted to share it with everyone. We videotaped us taking down the wall. Thanks to iMovie, what was originally a 30 minute video (thats how long it took us to take the wall down) was shortened down to two minutes thanks to special effects. [hint – you can watch the video on HD on YouTube, you just have to change the settings – it decreases the blurriness.]

Thank you so much for watching. 🙂

Stay tuned for another post at the end of the week!

Influenster: Campus VoxBox

FOR ALL YOUR TECHNOLOGICAL NEEDSAt the beginning of the school year I learned about this website called Influenster. It is this website that you get the opportunity to test products for free.  I have always wanted to do something like this because who doesn’t love free stuff. All I had to do was connect my social media and take a few surveys every so often.

FullSizeRender-1IMG_7714Finally I received an email saying I was going to be participating in the Campus Voxbox. Once receiving this email, I was  beyond happy. I finally got the chance do see what this website was all about. I constantly check my mail box day after day until i finally got a package that looked like this (Picture to the right.) I raced back to my room and the only thing I wanted to do was open up this box, it was like Christmas morning all over again because I had no idea what to expect.

Once opening it, this is what I found and I was beyond excited to start testing all the objects because they all looked so cool and fun to use. So just for clarification, upon receiving these items, it is my job to test them and review them. So that is exactly what I am going to do. In this box I got multiple things such as: trial shampoo, face wash, suntan lotion, chapstick and sour candy. With that being said lets begin reviewing.

tape edgesSo I am going to begin with the Sour Punch Rainbow Straws. Well for starters, my favorite type of candy is anything sour so I was extremely happy to try these. It just so happens, my boyfriend Josh, is also a sour candy lover. Since he was with me when we tried it, I thought I would let him review it. This is what he said, “The Rainbow straws would get a 4/5.” The idea is cool. There are multiple colors in one container (Strawberry, Green Apple, Blue Raspberry and Lemon.) What makes these straws different is that they are thicker compared to the normal Sour Punch Straws. Out of all the flavors, the lemon is the worst. Overall, It is worth buying.”

sour punch punchiesFollowing with the sour candy theme is the Sour Punch Punchies. In my opinion they were not as sour and more sweet. This is what Josh said, “I would give them a 3/5. They are worth trying but the flavor is not the most satisfying to my sour tastebuds.” The best things about these is that they do not leave a mess. They are also very soft and chewy which makes it simple to enjoy.  If you are given the opportunity to try it, I would give it a shot, but if you are a sour candy enthusiast like ourselves, it might not be worth your time or effort.

soft lipsOne of my favorite things out of this VoxBox would be the SoftLips Cube.  I am a strong believer that you can never have enough chapstick. Especially because it started to get super windy and now my lips are chapped. At least it gave me a chance to really test it out. The best way I can describe this chapstick is by comparing it to gum. You know when you are done chewing minty gum and you spit it out but your mouth sill feels minty? Well if you know what I am talking about than this is exactly what the SoftLips Cube feels like. It does great with making me feel like my lips are moisturized. The shape is also unique because it is a cube instead of a stick. The only downside I can think about this is that it seems like I am going to finish it soon. Maybe it is because I am constantly using it. I say this is something that is worth trying and giving a shot.

tape edges (1)Also in the box I got, St. Ives Apricot Scrub. I am a big fan of scrubs because it feels like it making a difference on my face. I haven’t been using it long enough to see if it actually controls acne but it leaves my face feeling clean. Also, it has a very nice smell so that is always an added bonus. For me, some face washes seem to leave my face feeling dried out, but this one makes it feel fresh and soft. I have heard good things about this product so I am very glad that I have been able to try to give it a shot because finding a good face wash has always been a struggle for me.

tape edges (1)I have always been the type of person who believes in getting a tan the natural way, by the sun. I know some people go to tanning booths, or get a spray tan, but thats just not for me because I want it to look natural, and what is more natural than a tan from the sun? Nothing. But, I do have to say this bronzer does work very well if you are into those types of things.  It is instant and dries very quickly. I also had a pre conceived idea that it was not going to smell good but it was actually very nice. I did not use it a lot, but I tested it out on the underside of my arm and it blended in very well and it did not leave my fingers orange like I expected it too. It also came off in the shower which is good incase you do not like how it works with your skin.

tape edges (4)Last but not least is the Trial sized L’oreal Smooth Intense 3-in-1. Step one is the Shampoo. Step two is the pre conditioner and Step three is the conditioner. I put my trust in this product as I used it the day I had to take a professional picture for my job and it did not disappoint me. I did blow dry my hair after using these products so I feel like that also helped. Of course, In order for this product to fully work, I think you would need to use it more than once. It is a product that I will be looking into buying because since my hair has an awkward wave it will be interesting to see it it is fixed by it. I do think this is a great concept because it will not burn hair like a straightener does and it also saves time.

So this post is a lot different than what I am used to doing and I hope I will get to experience this again. I really enjoy being a part of Influenster and I love the opportunity that I have been given.

My Cure to Homesickness

The transition into college can always be a rough one, but thanks to my loving family and family friends, it was not hard.  In fact I never got home sick, because of many factors but one including the amount of love I received from everywhere and everyone.  On my weekly visits to my mailbox, I would always be surprised by several postcards. Funny enough my friends would check and find bills and boring grown-up stuff as I call it from their mailbox and I would be getting fun postcards. As soon as I got back to my room, I would read them and put them on the wall of my room or the cork board on my desk.  I ended up getting so many that I ordered postcard pocket sleeves and they are all in a binder.  Instead of having a trading card collection, I have aquired a post card collection.

I would like to thank my Grandpa and Grandma, my Granddad, my dad, my mom, my Aunt Jackie, my Uncle Steve, JoAnn,Vickie, Kevin and Brenda Hunt, Sandy, Sherri, Pat Mama Rutledge, and Cindy Andrews plus her family. The amount of love I received from you all really made a difference in my attitude and transition.  It made me feel happy that I was being thought of and that you are all supporting me.  When ever I feel down or stressed, I just take a look at the cards and read the messages, and it helps me calm down and smile.

Below is a collection of all the post cards that I have received since I started school. I hope you enjoy it just as much as I do.

These post cards are from all over and represent all the people who are important to me. Thank you again to everyone who took time out of their day to send me a post card.  I appreciate it immensely.

Talk to everyone soon,

Tori <3

Second Semester Impressions

Last semester, I wrote about my first impressions of my classes, so I thought it would be a great idea to keep that going and review my second semester classes for you. To begin with this is my schedule: (it might be a bit confusing, so i’ll explain about it later on)…

Screen Shot 2014-11-17 at 9.04.14 PM

Kinda confusing right? Maybe this one will make more sense?

Screen Shot 2014-11-17 at 9.04.00 PM

That’s a bit better right? Well for my second semester, I am enrolled in 16 credits, as stated in the picture above. If there is any other confusion, the picture below should help with that. Below is my weeks schedule.  The school makes it very hard to find all the information in the same place and is a bit confusing (as you saw above), so I have to put it all together.IMG_7005

One thing I did last semester was color code my classes which helped me with organization. Below is my color coding for 2nd semester cheat sheet. In my planner when I have events or homework I write it in the color that corresponds with the class it is associated with.

With out further ado, this is my first/second week of second semester impressions…

IMG_4202SPANISH 101. It’s about time that I took a Spanish class in my education. In middle school I had the opportunity to choose French or Spanish after sampling them both for a semester, I chose French.  This meant that I continued to learn French in high school too.

For my Education major, I have to pick a minor. I think Spanish would be the perfect minor if I want to teach in California especially if I pick Southern California.  The only problem is… I do not know any Spanish, so this can be quite a journey.

So since I don’t know any Spanish, I am enrolled in the first class offered where you are not supposed to know any Spanish, but the thing is, I am surrounded by classmates who have taken 2-3 years in high school.  They claim to not remember anything but from what I can tell, they have such an advantage already. Tutoring is being offered and I know I will be taking those chances.  I also have already formed a study group where we do homework together. While I am a bit nervous, I am excited to see where this class may take me.

I took my first exam today, and since I was under pressure I started to remember french but not Spanish.  I think it’s time to get some help for sure.

RELIGION 100. Since I go to a religious school, it is required for me to take a religion class. Now with the freedom of picking classes, I wanted to make sure I was enrolled in a good class. During the hour before my registration, the original class I wanted was full and waitlisted.  This meant that I had to make decision and fast.  Luckily my roommate took religion during her first semester and was able to help me.  I actually ended up picking her professor for one main reason.  There is no tests.

By now, I’m sure its obvious that I am not a big fan of tests.  Especially with my heavy workload, this makes the class so much more enjoyable.  Instead of worrying and stressing about studying, I just have to post on some online discussion threads about my opinions about certain topics from my reading once a week.  To me, that is so much easier than any test.

MATH 110. A subject I have always struggled in was math. Unfortunately, because of low SAT scores, I was placed in a math course that does not meet any requirements because it is so basic.  But, in my opinion, this is just what I need. I need to be refreshed on the basics, especially if I want to end up teaching.

Most of the time, what makes the math class easy or hard is how the teacher presents the topic.  The teacher that I have is very quirky and funny.  She tries to make everyone laugh which is always good.  She started off the class on the first day of classes by saying, “What did the acorn say when it grew up? ….. Gee, I’m a tree.”  Get it… geometry (Gee, I’m a tree?) Well i thought it was funny.

To make matters even better, one of my roommates bought this textbook so she is letting me use it this semester.  Free textbooks are always the best kind of text books. One thing I notice is that I do not dread going to math class, which is wonderful improvement because that was one thing I always struggled with.

IMG_7010Creative Drama for Child/Youth. If you recall, last semester for my freshman seminar class, my professor was the head of my major.  I made sure that I had him again and since this class is required for my major, it works out. Since this class is a drama course, it requires using my imagination and improvising.

This class is all about teaching kids drama, and the professor believes that the best way to learn is by doing field experience. This means that I will have the opportunity to actually visit elementary schools and teach them lessons. This is something that I am really looking forward to doing.

Screen Shot 2015-02-04 at 9.58.26 AMTennis. I am required to take a PE class once to fill my colleges general education requirements. There was lots to pick from but I chose tennis. For those who don’t know, I love playing tennis. I played all four years in high school. And was on Varsity during junior and senior year plus captain.

This class is even more fun because I am enrolled in it with some of my closest friends.  I have this class on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  The best part is that this is my only class that I have on those days so after I can shower, rest and catch up on some work.

It is safe to say that I miss playing tennis, so I am glad that I have this opportunity to be physically active while doing something that I love.

And that is a summary of all my classes I am taking this semester. Also, I am getting a lot more involved on campus and participating in events, so its great to feel involved. I will talk to everyone soon.  If you have any thoughts on my classes, let me know, I would love to hear about them!

My Roommate Questionnaire Video

Since second semester just started, it is safe to say that I have gotten to know my roommates pretty well.  We have lived in the same living quarters for several months and we all thought it would be fun to film a video together answering some of these questions:

  • Which roommate studies the most?
  • Which roommate is the pickiest eater?
  • Who is the loudest out of everyone?
  • Who is the most dramatic?
  • Who is the most responsible?
  • Who is the early bird?
  • Who is the most flirtatious?
  • Who has the best style?
  • Who is the biggest hoarder?
  • (Plus several more..)

P.S. In the video from left to right is: Nikki, Dani, Emily and myself. (That’s to help out those who don’t know any of us or what we look like.)

I hope you enjoyed the video. I’m going to keep this short and simple because today is my birthday and I’m about to go out to dinner with my roommates and friends to Stacked. I will talk to you all very soon!
